I answer more of your thoughtful questions and comments from episodes 27 and 28! In this episode, I make reference to a live recording that was done in a cavernous old courthouse in Sioux Falls. It was an experiment using all-natural reverb. This recording has no artificial reverb added. I tell you what Kush audio by UBK has some seriously fantastic plugins, not surprised to see Eric using his stuff. His compressors and EQ's are so damn tasty! You gotta try his Novatron compressor and the Clariphonic EQ. The compressor is super transparent, and you will love the top end of the Clariphonic, so hard to describe but just try it already! Great video Eric.

I still come back to these videos ALL the time! Something I would seriously pay good money for is a full stream of you mixing a song (or even just drums) live and talking through your decisions. It's already great to see the end result, but seeing the failed experiments involved and listening along to know how far to push things would be amazing. Hope you're well, all the best!

Omg omg omg. This top 3 greatest mixing and mastering video! Your knowledge is vast and explanations are clear and consise! Its as if i wasnt hearing music before!!! You my friend are a diamond and this video is gold! Much love and thank you from the bottom of my heart! My friends please go high on the friendly skys and listen to the album, whats going on in full AFTER this video. It is magical and will give u an experience like never before. My mixes have already improved thanks to the IDEAS presented! Your love of music reminded me of me. Many wouldnt understand the sheer gorgeousness you so beautiful covered! Music makes tho; we can hear just how wonderful the masters truly were! Just add a bunch of air. Lighten shit up. Its like these mfs just had a “sound good preset” (obvs for THEIR stuff).

Hey Eric! Would it be possible for you to upload the full REW file for the final room readings, maybe Fuzz measure too? It would be incredibly educational! I'm about to demo a pair of MF4 in my studio this week - cant wait!

Yo, would you please consider making a video about editing. Like how much you lock things to the grid, when you decide not to edit, when you decide to edit. Guitars, bass, vocals etc. Trying to decide what to fix and what not to fix drives me crazy

The Evertune system only maintains the set tuning (good or bad)… it does NOT address any of the issues (i.e. discordant thirds) rooted in the equal temperament based fret placement.

Thanks sooo much for doing this. I’ve loved the record since 1992. Gotta tell ya, though - I’m pausing the video at 57:35 bc I’ve always LOVED the alternating snare drum sound on this. But it’s your prerogative to change it for this. Thanks again for making this!

I had a question regarding using effects when mixing in the passive summing console set up. For example, what would your approach be for sending a vocal to a reverb after it has been eq’d and compressed then automated with the ngLEVELER? Since the signal is being processed and changing level after coming out of the computer, wouldn’t you want the reverb to receive that signal as opposed to sending the preprocessed vocal to the reverb in the computer? Thanks for all you do!

👍on tuning "up" to the note... if I'm sharp, I'll drop below the note and slide up. The process reminds me of the sport of curling 🥌:) as you're tuning up to the desired pitch like sliding the stone down the ice toward the target. Makes me giggle :) Such great videos! thanks!

Finally. Something I disagree with you on! I am from the same area as you, the same age, very similar tastes, i.e. all paths lead back to Led Zeppelin. But, I looked into The Shaggs, and yes, it is totally freeform, free expression, and that all sounds great on paper, but…🙉

GP9 is usually fine, I’m not sure why you are having a problem with them. I pretty much exclusively use NOS tape (I’m a big 456 guy, I’m not too impressed with the in production tapes out there) and I’ve definitely had some issues with 456 but never GP9

Wow! I’ve only just found and watched this! I thought it was Geoff on all the guitars and it turns out it’s all (or most?) of the rhythm guitar is Eric?!? And the intro sweeping is Steve Ouimette!! My world’s a tad upside down now. I need to know more of who played what now 😂 The guitar solo track Bone Down, who is that then, I assume Geoff? Thank you so much for this Eric.

Hey Eric! what a great episode! I was on ProStudio Masters' site today, supposedly HIfi tracks straight from the studio, but it's obviously often post heavey handed mastering. I was wondering if you could make a list of your recent records ( or older) that are self mastered, with no loudness in min? records 100% to your taste, no butchering by a label ? thanks !!! Best

Hey Eric, your content is very helpful and I really value it. Thank you! When the time comes for another video on tracking, I would really love your perspective on how you address multi-mic phasing (of course on drums). If I use All-Star as an example, You have mics facing all different directions. 3 kick mics up front and a K/S mic facing opposite, then a tube 47 + 2 OH and a Coles as distant mics. I’d love to try out your techniques, but how you make this all cohesive makes my head spin. I know you’ve done drums mixing before, but a video directly on PHASE relationships is something I havent had taught in detail. Thanks if you can get to this!

I wanted to ask about your EQ philosophy. Not in relation to this song, but in referencing something I've heard you say quite a few times over the years: "I have to carve out space for xxxx". In super dense mixes, you always do such an amazing job at representing the entire frequency spectrum, with what seems like no "holes" top to bottom - almost like white noise. Is there a strategy or process with that? In other words, if you carve out 6db of boxiness on a drum buss at 500Hz, do you think "I can give that space to the Wurlitzer"? I don't imagine that's something you consciously strategize on, but I'd love to hear more about how you avoid buildups in certain areas and achieve such a nicely distributed frequency spectrum. Thanks! And I really appreciate all the time you take to share!
